Engineered Boulder Retaining Wall on a Steep Lakefront Lot

How we stabilized a steep hillside with natural boulders, stone steps, and terraced paver landings overlooking the lake.

The challenge

Steep lakefront slope before terracing
The hillside dictated a phased hardscape and shoreline approach.

Dave approached us with a steep hillside and minimal entertaining space off the deck. From the water, the home needed a stronger presence—terracing, safe lake access, and hardscape that survives Northern Michigan freeze-thaw cycles and wave action at the shore.

The goal was not a cosmetic refresh. We needed engineered mass on the slope, usable landings for guests, and a natural aesthetic that reads as shoreline—not a suburban retaining wall catalog.

Boulder walls & lake access

We reinforced the existing seawall with natural boulders and installed stone steps for safe access to the water. Natural boulder retaining walls paired with segmental block created balanced terracing around the stair run to the house and upper deck.

Boulder retaining wall installation here carried real soil load on an aggressive grade while keeping a shoreline character that fits Grand Traverse Bay.

Paver landings & the bench seat

Paver landings break up the slope into usable gathering zones.

A series of paver landings within the terracing created multiple entertaining levels. Near the top, a boulder bench seat became the focal point for lake views—one of our favorite details on recent waterfront builds.

The finished project expanded outdoor living dramatically and improved the home's presence from the water.
